BALL IS LIFE

Im a high skool freshman and i worked alot on my individual skills over the summer to prepare for this season. I thought the work i put in wud be good enuf to land me a varsity spot but right now im only playing on frosh/jv. One of my main problems seems to be that i cant really apply the moves and things i practiced when im playin in games and make lots of mistakes, and also that i dont have good chemistry with my teammates so i dont play as well as i shud be. Is there anything i shud do better to improve?

I have experienced the same thing, the best thing to do is show no hesitation on what your going to do whether it be a drive to the hoop, jump shot or dribble move you just have be 100% confident in what you're doing. The chemisty issue is a tough one cuz if you're not tight with a person off the court it affects your team chemistry so I'd just say try and bring the whole team together and it should help.

I have the same problem im a sophomore and as a freshmen i was unable to think on the court which caused me to create turnover after turnover just like JOHN ZAK said in his reply show no hesitation and be confident in what your doing on the court at all times....I am a good player but the thing that brings my skills down is the fact that i hesitate which hurt me for a varsity spot my frosh and soph year...even tho you arent cool with someone off the court..none of that should matter in the game you need to have confidence in yourself and your team mates without that the team will struggle during gametime situations...from middle school to high school basketball its a huge change in game speed..and some freshmen arent used to it..so it also takes some time to adapt to the game..Just do you and dont think on the court REACT

When you practice work on game moves.

pratice your moves at a game speed level constantly, on a constant schedule, so its nothing for you, and you should only have 5-7 go to moves. rely on those, work on them until there bread and butter. and as ur teammates be a teammate, communicate with them as a friend/family, and be a leader by example. be patient in the game and let the game come to u , don't force the game, watch Kobe Bryant play, he lets the game come to him, that's why he passes a lot in the beginning of the game and starts scoring more progressively.. last but not least always WORK HARD

well first and foremost don't be discouraged that you didn't make varsity as a freshman, it's pretty rare that a freshman plays varsity unless you're one of the top players in the nation.. most coaches don't even let freshman play on varsity just because of the fact that they're freshman.

anyways, as far as applying your moves and playing better with your teammates.. start playing a lot of pickup games and start practicing the moves you're doing. as far as chemistry with your team that's a little harder because that's also up to your teammates just as much as it's up to you, but the key to team chemistry is to put your pride aside and realize you're playing as a team and you're not going out of your way to show off your skills, rather do it within the flow of the game.. oh and you learn from your mistakes so I'm sure you won't be repeating your mistakes that much anymore.. Just pay attention to why you're making those mistakes so you can work on fixing it.

Best advice is get your fellow classman you play with often in games and a couple others, run at the park, run @ lunch @ school, after school, whatever it takes. If i could go back, i would have done this. I had great chemistry with jus a few players, but my sr yr a couple new cats came, and the new coach favored some of the weaker cats so our chemistry was pointless by this time, but thats jus 1 school, doesnt happen everywhere. Had i got my boys together even if jus sr year and got our chemistry down, we coulda been much better. Also make sure ur varsity coach is aware, he needs to know that the underclassmen and his future players are working to do somethin for sr year and be able to help you do this.

Check out Allen Crabbe, 6'4" shooting guard from Price High School who just recently was named California's Gatorade Player of the Year. The Cal bound guard is a great scorer especially when he's shooting from a stand still, and can knock down shots…
