BALL IS LIFE

Im athetic, 5'10 145 lbs and also pretty strong. I have recently been trying to learn to use the up and under type of layups. I can do them well without defense but with defense its harder because people are grabbing at the ball and all. Back in like 8th grade I used to be crazy with it doing up and under reverse layups and such and I think thats how I build my athleticism but I slacked off. So I want to know how I can finish at the basket with these athletic moves and with contact. I want to be able to finish with acrobatic layups like Allen Iverson, Chris Paul, Jameer Nelson and so on. Help please.

5'10 and 145 is not strong enough. You need to be about 5'10 and 155-160 with a lot more strength and quickness. You also need to build confidence, confidence is key to anything in all sports. If your confident in your abilities all you can do is improve on them because you are confident enough to try it

Practice man, practice.

First thing you have to do is pretty much just be able to get a great feel around the basket, so whenever there's a dead time in say a pick up game, team practice, or whenever, just practice putting in those 'easy' shots, practice putting different spins on the ball and everything like that.

The part about finishing with contact is sometimes just a natural ability, but the only way you can get better at it is by attacking the basket relentlessly and searching for that contact whenever possible. In any type of competition just focus on getting to the rim and finishing. With time it will come.

thats the type of response that needs to be done by all ballplayers

I can do it fine and i'm 5 pounds lighter at the same height. Just generate a lot of spin of the board and when you drive press the ball and hold it like a running back does.

Basically what Will said. And its something that will come to you naturally in games and it will happen by default. Most of the time you do not need to reverse it but when you are going to for me i always do my reverse layups on a fast break.

curl the ball like a running back

its all about sealing the defender/'s off with your body. and knowing when and when not to do a reverse or floater or taking it straight at the cup

you can do core exercises and sit ups. im 5 9 and 166 lbs and i can finish at the rim but i can almost dunk so i usually just jump over my opponents or cross them and beat them to the basket. but you can get a weight vest and that will get you quicker if you work out with that, all you have to do is practice your moves with it on so when you take it off you feel like a feather.

well it all starts off with not being scared to take contact and being confident.. that's the key to it, once you get that down the getting better part will just come to you naturally because a lot of scoring using athletic ability also relies a lot on your instincts because you gotta be able to act fast.
